On the passing of the Higher Education Support Amendment (Response to the Australian Universities Accord Interim Report) Bill 2023, higher education providers were required to have a short principle statement-based Support for Students Policy published by 1 January 2024. Further requirements including details regarding the assessment of students’ capability to succeed in a subject, support to be available, training for academic staff, levels of resourcing and extensive reporting, was provided via a guidelines document in early 2024 with compliance required by 1 April 2024. These changes, whilst not amending the intention of the policy statements, provide the additional required detail with a number of required refinements including: • Amendments to language to align with the recently published Department of Education, Skills and Employment Guidelines • Explicit inclusion of The College and Third Party Providers • Expansion of definitions • Expansion of statements and addition of required sections on: o Student success o Monitoring of academic risk factors o Student responsibility o Census dates o Academic support services o Non-academic support services o Supporting Diversity and inclusivity o Academic and in-classroom support o Review and reporting Considering the tight timeframes imposed by the legislation this version was approved via the Brief Channel process under Delegation Schedule HH12. Ownership of this policy document moved with this version from the VP P&A to the DVCE. Approval from both Executive Sponsors was obtained for this version.
