Summary of Changes from Previous Version

The Walker Review released on 9 December 2020 by the Commonwealth Department of Education, Skills and Employment found that Western Sydney University’s policies were mostly aligned with the Model Code on Freedom of Speech and Academic Freedom (“Model Code”), but that there were some areas of misalignment. This revised Charter incorporates the feedback from the Walker Review and, in addition, acknowledges the traditions and learning culture of Australia's first peoples and incorporates the names of the four nations. Recognising that a broader audience than just the academic community will read this document, the reference to 'scholarship' has been supplemented with the words "teaching and learning". The revised document was approved by Senate Executive Committee on 13 July 2021 (resolution SEC 21/08:01.
