1 in 4 Australian women, and 1 in 20 men have experienced family or domestic violence since the age of 15. As such, it can be assumed that a significant proportion of our staff and students will be impacted by related matters across the course of their employment or studies at our University. Individuals affected by family and domestic violence may have limited resources or require urgent access to information and support. As part of a recent review of our University’s available policy documents and online content it was found that whilst there is significant information on sexual assault under the Respect.Now.Always initiative, there was minimal targeted information in the area of family and domestic violence support, and the information available is not centralised. (Clauses are included in the Enterprise Agreements, and accommodated to a degree within the Workplace Flexibility and Gender Equality Policy). The development of a policy on Family and Domestic Violence is included in our Gender Equality Strategy and Action Plan (Goal 5: A flexible workplace which enables staff to balance work and life responsibilities) and is also in alignment with our University’s commitment (Securing Success: Goal 6.18) to maintain our status as a WGEA Employer of Choice for Gender Equality, which requires that organisations have in place a Family and Domestic Violence Policy or Strategy. In keeping with these strategic requirements, the Office of Equity and Diversity have coordinated the drafting of the Family and Domestic Violence Support Policy, and complimentary Staff Guidelines and web content. This policy consolidates information on existing supports available for staff and students, and has no additional financial impact on University resources.
