Student Representation & Participation

Student Representation & Participation (SRP) supports the student representative structures and equity networks within Western Sydney University including the:

• Student Representative Council (SRC) (opens in a new window)
• Student Editors of Western's Student Newspaper (W'SUP) (opens in a new window)
• Student Collectives: Women's Collective, Queer Collective, Disability Collective, Ethno-Cultural Collective, Environment Collective, Indigenous Student Council, International Student Assocation.

This support includes strategic advice, financial oversight and facilitation of the student voice. Please note SRP are a small group of University staff who support the activities of the groups listed above. SRP staff members do not hold positions on the council – the council is an independent student body.

How does the Student Representation model work?

Students from varying cohorts are directly elected to form the Student Representative Council (SRC). The SRC is the primary student representative body of the University that brings the interests of the student population together to advocate for the interests of students across all campuses. The SRC's role is to identify, enhance and promote the interests of students of that campus.

Every campus has a student representative each, including Online, except in the case of smaller campuses such as Sydney City and Westmead where there is a student elected from all of these cohorts to represent the interests of the smaller campuses. Each equity representative convenes the equity collectives elected by students from within their collective, including representation of Intl and Residential students. The SRC also has five executive members including the President, Vice-President Education (Undergraduate), Vice-President Education (Postgraduate), Vice-President (Activities) and General Secretary.

Six students across the University are also elected each year to produce the Student Newspaper, W'SUP. Editor positions are advertised in the Student Representation Notice of Election (available during elections). One student is appointed to the role of Director of Student Publications by the Editors elected in the previous year.

The SRP model is established under a Western Sydney University policy and underlying Procedures.

Procedures and Structure

The SRC has voted to amend the procedures, which will modify the structure so that all student representatives on the SRC are directly elected by their constituents. What can representatives help me with?

Student representatives aim to invigorate the student body at the University. Each representative is a student from a diverse range of backgrounds, cultures and areas of study. Student reps on your campus will be able to listen and assist on matters relating, but not limited, to:

• Food outlets and prices
• Parking and transport
• Academic teaching quality
• Student services and facilities
• Clubs, societies and campus life
• Social action and campaigns
• Education action
• Campus ideas and activities
• Disability access
• Campus safety

What can you do if you believe one of your student representatives is not behaving appropriately in their role?

As per the Student Representation and Participation Procedures all complaints relating to a student rep, student editors or a student elected as a delegate to the NUS National Conference, under these procedures should be directed in the first instance to the SRC executive members. LifeSavers Shield

Western Sydney University are proud to be part of Lifeblood Teams, the social responsibility program of the Australian Red Cross Lifeblood. Life depends on blood and plasma, so we are running Western's LifeSavers Shield blood drive to help save over 400 lives! The blood drive runs from 1 August to 31 October every year, and we need your help!
