Section 1 - Purpose and Context

(1) The Board of Trustees (Board) has made provision for the conferring of the title Emeritus Professor (EP) of the University of Western Sydneyon professors upon resignation or retirement.

Section 2 - Definitions

(2) Nil.

Section 3 - Policy Statement

(3) The criteria for eligibility for appointment as an Emeritus Professor (EP) are that the professor has:

1. occupied the position of professor in the University for a minimum period of 5 years, unless exceptional circumstances are involved; and
2. given distinguished service to the University either through scholarly excellence in a specific field of study, or brought academic distinction to the University through the general development of a specific field of study nationally and/or internationally, or by material contribution to the overall development of the Institution; and
3. demonstrated a significant commitment to the University.

(4) The conferment of the title of Emeritus Professor (EP) is regarded as a high honour, and is not to be seen as a normal expectation for all University professors who retire from the University's service.

(5) The Remuneration and Nominations Committee (RNC) undertakes the evaluation of nominations received and makes recommendations to the Board of Trustees.

(6) In exceptional circumstances, the Board can confer the Emeritus Professor title on individuals without a formal recommendation.

(7) The title is normally awarded on retirement, but may be conferred on resignation, especially where a senior position is being taken up elsewhere. The procedures for conferring the title can be followed in advance for a current member of staff approaching retirement.

Section 4 - Procedures

(8) Nominations are to be submitted to the Remuneration and Nominations Committee via the Vice-Chancellor and President on a confidential basis.

(9) A nomination should be supported by a minimum of three full professors of the University, comprising representation from at least two different areas of the University.

(10) The documentation required for a nomination is:

1. a summary statement of no more than one page, suitable to be used as a citation if presented at graduation;
2. a detailed CV;
3. statements of support as outlined in clause 9, and any other statements in support of the nomination.

(11) Nominations may be made at any time during the year for referral to the next scheduled meeting of the Remuneration and Nominations Committee.

(12) The Remuneration and Nominations Committee may choose to seek the views of one or more distinguished externals on a nomination.

(13) For cases where a nomination is on the basis of scholarly excellence in a specific field of study, or bringing academic distinction to the University through the general development of a specific field of study nationally and/or internationally, the externals will usually be professors in the relevant subject area.

(14) For cases where a professor is being nominated for the Emeritus Professor title on the basis of material contribution to the overall development of the University the external will usually be a senior academic leader (e.g. Vice-Chancellor and President or Deputy Vice-Chancellor ) of another university.

(15) Nominations are to be treated as confidential during all stages and individuals making nominations are advised of progress and the outcome of their nomination.

(16) The recommendations of the Remuneration and Nominations Committee will be forwarded to the Board for determination.

Conditions

(17) Conferment of the title Emeritus Professor will be by letter signed by the Chancellor (or delegate). The recipient will receive an appropriate certificate, which may be presented at a graduation ceremony or otherwise as appropriate.

(18) The person upon whom the title Emeritus Professor has been conferred is regarded as having the academic rank of professor for all purposes, including ceremonial occasions.

(19) There is no remuneration received by the holder of the title in that capacity and he/she does not exercise any of the normal administrative functions associated with the title professor. By virtue of the title, the recipient is not entitled to membership of Academic Senate or any other University body. This does not preclude a person undertaking a casual or fixed-term appointment with the University, after receiving the Emeritus Professor title.

(20) Each Emeritus Professor may be offered particular privileges if the recipient indicates a desire to continue to be connected to the University. These may include library and IT access and any other resources as determined with the relevant operational Unit Head,
