Summary of Changes from Previous Version

The Walker Review released on 9 December 2020 by the Commonwealth Department of Education, Skills and Employment found that Western Sydney University’s policies were mostly aligned with the Model Code on Freedom of Speech and Academic Freedom (“Model Code”), but that there were some areas of misalignment. In line with the recommendations of the Walker Review, changes were made to the Staff Code of Conduct (BOT resolution 4/8/2021:5), together with the Charter of Academic Freedom (Senate Executive Committee resolution 21/08:01), Freedom of Speech Policy (BOT resolution 4/8/2021:5) and Explanatory Note: Model Code for Protection of Freedom of Speech and Academic Freedom in Australian Higher Education Providers (BOT resolution 4/8/2021:5). The Code of Conduct and Freedom of Speech Policy (which are Board of Trustees policies) have been amended and now specifically adopt all principles of the Model Code and remove restrictive language as recommended by the Walker Review. The Explanatory Note now contains a reference to paragraph 6 of the Operation Section from the Model Code, which concerns workplace agreements.
