Summary of Changes from Previous Version

28 February 2018 – Update references to the Department of Immigration and Border Protection which has changed to the Department of Home Affairs.

1 February 2018 – Deleted redundant clause 51 “Best Practice Guide to Alternative Pathways Implementation” as approved during consultation and publication of version 8 of this policy.

The deferral option had been quite problematic for some courses which have a small number of offers based on available clinical places, with further complications due to deferment possible up until the week of commencement of studies. In addition, it was noted that the students in these courses who defer for a year often do not return the following year. To overcome this problem, applicants were contacted to confirm their return. However despite this process, uncertainty remained with applicants who were contacted on two occasions to confirm their return, still not enrolling. This uncertainty made it difficult to calculate how many students could be offered the very limited clinical placements each year, with the quarantining of clinical placements required for these returning students. The strategy to limit the availability of deferment for some courses was agreed to decrease this fluidity and unpredictability.
