Summary of Changes from Previous Version

11 May 2021 – System Administrator Fix – updated placeholders for Board of Trustees from the Division-based record to the Committee-based record.

15 May 2020 – Position title “University Secretary” updated to “University Secretary and General Counsel”.

8 February 2018 – Amend the heading “Part 6 – Vice-Chancellor” to “Part 7 – Vice-Chancellor” due to the duplication of the heading.  Subsequent Parts re-numbered sequentially.

The Western Sydney University Act 1997 (“Act”) was amended in 2014, in response to recommendations from the NSW Red Tape Taskforce relating to governance of NSW universities. These changes permit much of the content formerly required to be in a bylaw to be now contained in rules made by the Board. The exceptions to this are those provisions relating to terms of office and qualifications of Board members, which must still be contained in a bylaw. In 2016 the University Secretary and General Counsel commenced a review of the Western Sydney University By-law 2005, the UWS Rules and the Governance (Pro Chancellor) Rule to implement changes to the Act and to make other changes to generally improve governance and remove some anomalies. These changes, including repealing the existing UWS Rules and Governance (Pro Chancellor) Rule and moving its content, as well as some content on election procedures that was previously contained in the Bylaw into the new Western Sydney (Governance) Rule were approved by the Board of Trustees at its meeting in February 2017.
