Summary of Changes from Previous Version

6 May 2021 – System Administrator Fix – update the placeholder for Academic Senate and Board of Trustees from the Division-based record to the Committee-based record.


10 July 2020 – Globally replaced all references to the “Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Research, Engagement, Development and International” with the ‘Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Research, Enterprise and International”.


4 August 2017 – Policy amended to reflect the position and unit title change of the Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Vice-President, Research and Development to ‘Research, Engagement, Development and International ‘.


23 November 2016 - policy amended to delete references to the redundant title 'Academic Registrar's Office' and replace with the 'Graduate Research School'.

8 July 2016 - policy amended to reflect the official name change of the University concurrent with the change to the University's Act and By-Law.

10 February 2015 - Amended policy to reflect change of position title from 'Vice-Chancellor' to 'Vice-Chancellor and President' and change of position title from 'Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Research and Development' to 'Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Vice President, Research and Development'.

The Policy was due for review in 2012, and this has provided an opportunity to update it to reflect the recent leadership and management changes, remove the references to Colleges, and include the University Research Institutes.

The proposed revisions also address the clauses in which the Higher Doctorate Panel makes a confidential recommendation to Academic Senate about the award of a degree. Academic Senate will then convey its confidential recommendation to the Board of Trustees.

The recommendation is confidential, as matters of this kind are highly sensitive for the researchers involved, especially if it is recommended that a degree should not be awarded. A more public process would be likely to deter distinguished scholars from seeking a higher doctorate at this University, and would be inconsistent with our processes for other Higher Degree Research awards
