Summary of Changes from Previous Version

8 October 2021 – System Administrator Fix – updated placeholder for the reference to the Advanced Standing Policy to new title Credit for Prior Learning Policy.

The Academic Appeals Procedures have been reviewed due to an increase in the number and complexity of academic appeals. The Research Higher Degree Appeals Procedures have also been incorporated into this document, so that the HDR policies use the same set of appeals procedures as other policies of Academic Senate. The following changes have been incorporated into the attached revised procedures: 1. The revised procedures have been modelled more closely on the appeals procedures used in the Student Misconduct Rule, to provide the appropriate rigour and guidance to all parties concerning the process of appeal. It establishes clear guidelines for appeals on papers and hearing in person, and lists inclusions in the notice to be provided to students. 2. It combines the Research Higher Degree Appeals Procedure and the Academic Appeals Procedures into one single document. 3. Rather than pointing to policies that do not use these procedures, Section 3 now lists the policies that do prescribe to the procedures, as this seems to be a more helpful approach for both staff and students. 4. In cases where an appeal fails to establish valid grounds and so is not presented to the Committee for consideration, a second reviewer instated to establish valid grounds. 5. Other minor updates to capture new titles and to use plain English. 6. A proposed change of ownership of the procedures to the Office of Governance Services as the key business unit responsible for the appeals process.
