Summary of Changes from Previous Version

12 May 2020 – Position title for “University Librarian” updated to “Director, Library Services”.

11 February 2020 – Update to position title “Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Vice-President, Research and Innovation” retitled “Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Vice-President, Research, Enterprise and International”.

The revised Rule provides improved processes and efficiencies for those who administer the Rule and improved consistency in outcomes across the University. This is particularly evident in the imposition of sanctions, which can occur at three different levels (Authorised Officers under Category 1, Authorised Officers under Category 2 and Student Misconduct Committees). Other changes include: improvements to layout applied throughout the document, including legislative clauses and definitions moved to the end of the Rule; changes to preliminary assessment processes; increase, and new category, in Category 1 sanctions; introduction of minimum sanctions, on a sliding scale, for certain misconduct; clarification that there is no automatic right for a student to cross-examine witnesses in proceedings under this Rule although Authorised Officers (and Committees) have discretion as to when and how a witness may be cross-examined; new clauses that set out the effect of suspension, exclusion or expulsion sanctions; new definitions; direct reporting of research misconduct to Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research and Innovation); changes to the application of Suspension Orders have been made to streamline this process, including the application of automatic Suspension Orders in cases of serious general misconduct. A Fail grade in a unit given as a result of misconduct will stand, irrespective of whether the student is successful in an application to have fees remitted if extenuating circumstances apply under the Student Fees Policy. The rule is supported by the Student Misconduct Rule webpage which provides a user-friendly guide to the Rule for staff and students, as well as information for students about academic integrity and general misconduct.
