Summary of Changes from Previous Version

The review and redrafting of the Research Ethics Policy commenced in 2023. This review highlighted the need for two separate policy documents covering animal research ethics and human research ethics.

This policy document has been revised and renamed to provide the expectations and requirements of staff and students in relation to obtaining ethics approval for research and teaching involving animals at Western Sydney University. The revised policy document provides clarity regarding:
• the purpose and context of the policy document, bringing it in line with the legislative requirements (NSW and Commonwealth)
• University requirements of staff, students, affiliates and visitors undertaking research or teaching activities involving animals
• procedures related to the process of obtaining ethics approval, amendments and reporting requirements
• complaints, breaches and non-compliance procedures
• reference to animal ethics training
• relevant links.

The identified Head Policy for these procedures is the Responsible Conduct of Research Policy (which is an Academic Senate approved policy).
